We visited Pinecrest Gardens this weekend, a beautiful botanical garden in the tiny city of Pinecrest, Fl. It was originally built in the 1930′s to house what would become the world-famous Parrot Jungle attraction. In 2002 Parrot Jungle was moved to Miami Beach and the City of Pinecrest bought the land and made it into what it is today. They left the gardens and much of the surroundings untouched, you can still see many of the bird cages throughout the gardens. It’s definitely worth a visit if you are in Miami. You can read more about it here.
We love this place so much we even had out wedding here. We visit a few times a year; since they have a seasonal farmer’s market and special events throughout the year. We actually went for an art show this time but ended up spending more time walking the gardens, taking photos and eating than looking at the art.
When Parrot Jungle was built they left all the original vegetation and terrain alone and built around it. The gardens are still filled with ponds, coral rock formations and sink holes.
There are fallen trees all over the garden. Most have some sort of vegetation growing on them.
There are beautiful patterns on the floor all over the garden (which of course I forgot to take a picture of!). But here’s a mosaic tree of sorts showing the names of donors over the years.
You can find all sorts of plants here; from lush ferns to palm trees and even cactus.
There a number of birds, ducks, iguanas, a swan and a peacock that live by the lake.
Hope you enjoyed your virtual visit to Pinecrest Botanical Gardens, but really if you visit Miami this should be one your places to visit.
