Mid Century Modern Thrift Store Find {Dresser Edition}

We went to one of our favorite thrift stores a couple of weeks ago.  My mother in law was looking for a bookcase/bar and maybe a dresser. I wasn’t searching for anything in particular, I thought maybe I’d check out the dining chairs.

I’ve been on the fence for months on whether or not to spend the money to ’cosmetically’ enhance our existing dressers or just wait and get new ones down the line. I thought getting new ones meant spending big bucks, because let’s face it you can’t get a decent, quality wood dresser for less than $500.  And we need two.  So my plan was to spend maybe $50 on these guys and spruce them up until we bought new ones.

I even created a master bedroom mood board to get me motivated and keep me on track.

I was trying to think why I had zero motivation to fix that room. Then I realized my mental block was due to the dressers. Lets face it, no matter what I do to it, there is no way that this:

Is ever going to look like this (without spending a ton of money):

Then I spotted this beauty:

We saw the dresser, loved it but then went to just see if there was something else. Then a  lady started looking at it, I was dying inside but played it cool. I didn’t want her to know how much I wanted it. As soon as she walked away I ran to it and waited for the salesperson to come. There was no way I was loosing this puppy!

It was only $75! My mother in law was also getting two pieces and she haggled down the price to $60. I was so glad she was there cause I’m terrible at haggling, I just can’t do it. I would have paid full price.

It’s solid wood in perfect condition, has dovetail joints and pretty mid-century modern details.

All it needed was a little cleaning.

cleaning the wood dresser with vinegar

I wiped the dust down with a swiffer pad and ‘stripped’ the top layer of grime and wax/poly with vinegar. Then oiled it with olive oil.

The only thing wrong with it was that is was missing a pull. Nothing a trip to Home Depot couldn’t cure.

I still have to stain the pull and line the drawers with some funky paper. And it’s going to live in the guest bedroom until we’re able to find another one and sell the one’s we have.

Maybe now I’ll get inspired and start working on the master bedroom already!

  1. Hopping over from Nifty Thrifty Sunday. I too love a good MCM dresser, especially one with legs! With all the furniture painting going on in blogland these days, I’m glad to see this one looking lovely in its natural state. While many wood finishes look old and dated, I find that most MCM pieces have a nice wood tone that still looks fresh. Congrats on your great find!

    • I was dying to do the white and wood combo that looks so pretty, but I couldn’t bring myself to paint it. I feel like I would be ruining it.

  2. A great find and a very lovely dresser, love the legs. The wood is very pretty, in such great condition. Great mid-century piece. Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration with Sunday’s Best – you helped make the party a success!
